Notepad++ es un editor libre de texto y de código fuente que soporta muchos lenguajes de programación. Se ejecuta en MS Windows, y su uso está regulado bajo la licencia GPL.
Basado en el poderoso componente de edición Scintilla, Notepad++ está escrito en C++ y usa las API de Win32 y STL para garantizar una mayor velocidad de ejecución y un menor tamaño del programa. Optimizando algunas rutinas como sean posibles sin perder la familiaridad para el usuario. Notepad++ está intentando reducir las emisiones de dióxido de carbono en el mundo; así por ejemplo, cuando se utiliza menor potencia del CPU, el computador puede moderar la marcha y reducir el consumo de energía, resultando en una práctica más "verde" para el medio ambiente.
Este proyecto es maduro. No obstante, puede tener algunos errores y faltarle características que se están trabajando. From the v3.1, Notepad++ has the extension capacity - the plugin system. Please see Plugins HOWTO to learn how to install a plugin or/and how to develop a plugin.
A list of plugins is maintained on NpWiki++ and should be complete. You can use this list to add/update your plugins, but it may not be necessary - Plugin Manager plugin is included in Notepad++ release. It gets jobs done very well.
If you can not find the plugin you need, just make your own.
User Defined Language files:
For some reasons that some languages are not supported by Notepad++, User Language Define System can help you out in this case. This system allows user to define his own language : not only the syntax highlighting keywords definition, but also the syntax folding keywords definition, comment keywords definition and the operators definition.
You can define your language via User Language Define Dialog. However, the language you need may be already defined by someone-else in this User Defined Language List.
This version contains few majors fixes such as unicode file corrupted on saving bug, php syntax highlighting bug and some performance issues on Unicode files.
Some new features are added: "search and replace action macro recording", "Modify Shortcut/Delete Macro" and "Modify Shortcut/Delete Command".
Scintilla component is update to 2.20 in this version.
The contributions of project (Bug fixes, new features, binary translation, website translation, etc...) come from the worldwide.
Theoretically all the donations should be feed back to contributors of project. However, it's just impossible to share it fairly among the contributors.

This article is not all-inclusive or necessarily up-to-date. Unless otherwise specified in footnotes, comparisons are based on the stable versions without any add-ons, extensions or external programs.
^ Extracting/adding file and/or directory names into archive in either UTF-7, UTF-8 or UTF-16/UCS-2 encoding to support single file/directory name which contains characters from different languages. More recent versions of the zip file format have support for Unicode filenames.
^ In WinRAR 3.60, when opening 7-Zip archives which contains Unicode file/directory names, they will not be displayed correctly. There will be no problem extracting them, however.
^ Does support Unicode names, but not under the default (initial) option settings: the user must tick "Use OEM conversion for filenames" under "General" on the "Miscellaneous" tab in the Configuration dialog to enable Unicode name support. Full support for Unicode files names by default is supported only for 7-Zip and RAR archive formats.
^ Commandline batch compression is available only for ZIP and ALZ formats.
^ UTF-8 support was completed in release 2.5. On Unix systems the support is full, while on Windows systems, due to limitation of the Windows shell environment, double-character encoded characters cannot currently be displayed in filenames of archived objects, and those chars are replaced by a corrupted character. Optionally, extended characters can be set to be always replaced by a 'corrupted' "?" character to avoid possible issues between archive's and system's character encodings.[7].

^ Peazip supports file encryption and file name encryption, although only in certain types of archives, including its own Pea format, 7-zip, zip and Arc.

^ GNU tar calls external programs [2] (like compress, gzip or bzip2 or any other programs working with abstract streams and supporting the "-d" option) to perform (un)compression, and allowing you to implement your own filters[3]. These external programs may be shipped with your Operating System.

PeaZip has full support for various LPAQ and PAQ formats, QUAD and BALZ (highly efficient ROLZ based compressors), FreeArc format, and for its native PEA format.
7-Zip includes read support for .msi, cpio and xar, plus Apple's dmg/HFS disk images and the deb/.rpm package distribution formats; beta versions (9.07 onwards) have full support for the LZMA2-compressed .xz format.[1]
